An impressive 74 years in business across three generations makes Paeroa HandiLink Home and Hardware
among the oldest stores in town.
Grant Bowen has now been at the store for 43 years; initially as his fathers sidekick turned apprentice, he now runs the store alongside wife Michele. Dad still pops in the door for an hour or two most days and with an online presence becoming more important in business, daughter Amy helps them with marketing and facebook; making it a real family effort.
The store was first opened in 1947 by Grant’s grandfather solely as a hardware store but it has certainly evolved over the years - most recently to include home decor accessories carefully selected by Michele. The core of the business however, still remains the same – supplying paint and general home hardware to a mix of tradies and diy'ers.
Grant loves what he does, and he loves that it is in Hauraki. "We love being so central, and love knowing all the locals, who have obviously supported us for a long time!".
Grant and Michele are also actively involved with Positive Paeroa and really enjoy the community involvement and opportunities to give back wherever they can. "We just love the people side of doing business in a small town, the relationships you make. And it's all so much easier when we work together, support each other for the benefit of us all as a community. We enjoy shopping in our neighboring shops and often refer customers to other local stores if we don't have quite what they are after. We try to work with what others have in stock, we get what they don't have and vice versa".
Excited about the planned development of the old Paeroa Racecourse and new subdivisions throughout the area, Grant can see plenty of opportunity for business growth in the district. "This is a great place to get yourself started in business, right in the middle of everywhere!"

Retailer Collaboration is a Win for Ngatea Businesses.
Originally from Morrinsville, with over 17 years experience in hardware, Chris and Shelley Spilsbury were drawn to Ngatea 'the Heart of the Hauraki Plains' when an opportunity arose to purchase
Ngatea Hammer Hardware & Little RED Hen Giftshop
in 2012 .
"There were some discussions about the suitability of the location, but we decided that people contact is the biggest part of what we do. If you make those connections and give the service that your customers need no matter where they are, you'll be right. We also don't experience the seasonal business trends that coastal areas experience, it's more stabilised. Business is steady year round. And we've grown to just absolutely love the area we are in."
Seven years on, they are well settled into life in the Hauraki District and wanted to find a way to thank all their valued customers. Following discussions with Ngatea Four Square, they decided to expand on plans to create a Shop Ngatea campaign and collaborate with as many local businesses and services in the Ngatea area as possible. Creating something that could work for everyone was really important. Chris says "We wanted to make it easy to 'give back' to our customers. The customer will shop where they want to shop, so let's thank them for choosing to shop in our town. It really was about working together to truly value and thank the community who support us".
Chris walked the street and spoke to as many businesses as he could get to, to spread the word and had an incredible 29 businesses eager to be involved. Launching in November 'Shop Ngatea' was a resounding success, with combined entries easily filling a 100L tub over the course of the month.
The collective of local businesses contributed a generous $2300 worth of prizes and vouchers which were divided amongst three very lucky prize winners, drawn with the help of Ngatea Primary School students earlier this month. Chris has plans to recreate the campaign next year and will work with The Hauraki Plains team - the goal is to include every local business.
Some advice from Chris, if you are considering starting out in business - "Remember why you are there - why you are in business. Know your audience and know your customer. Above all, value them!"
Thank you Chris, Shelley and team, we love your community focused thinking and your collaborative efforts, it's just one reason why we "LoveHauraki!"

We are a whole foods & organic store which cater for bulk buying and special dietary requirements i.e gluten free, low carb, vegan, dairy free.
We are also passionate about the environment and encourage customers to bring their own jars, bottles and coffee cups into the store, to help reduce plastic waste within our community.
It's been a whirlwind ride for Hauraki locals Rebecca Culllimore and Rachel Payne who opened their Waihi store
The Sustainable Pantry in October 2018. Since then they have continued to evolve their store, most recently with a relocation to the heart of Seddon Street.
Friends Rebecca and Rachel share a passion for wholefoods and organics while being conscious of lessening household waste. Initially The Sustainable Pantry was centered around a boutique 'bulk bin' concept for general pantry items, organic alternatives and specialty items as well as household cleaners and detergents.
They still encourage a bring your own container ethos which has a dedicated local following, however have since refined their bulk ranges to focus on specialized flours and organic products not available elsewhere. While Covid19 regulations have had an impact on the use of reusable coffee cups in particular, the team are once again able to refill your cups with their fair trade coffee.
A range of retail products now feature in the store, as do ready made meals and fresh cabinet food items including the ever popular The Salad Lady meals, Pepper & Me seasonings,
No Ugly beverages and 'Garden of Eden' raw and vegan cakes and treats.
With a background as a nutritionist Rebecca wanted to introduce better ways of eating by keeping healthy alternatives easily accessible. The shop has adapted to include different ways of eating including Keto and low carb for example, because it should be easy to get what you need - and that is exactly what they have achieved. "We stock local (within North Island) wherever possible and love to support small businesses with a great backstory" says Rebecca. "We pay attention to trending products on social media with a preference to quality products that we would use ourselves and find many of our small stockists this way. We call that walking the talk, practicing what we preach!"
The girls have recently launched their online store, enabling the accessibility of their product ranges 24/7. "Covid19 dropped a bombshell on us" Rachel says. "Launching the website was a way of future proofing. We also have six children between us so the website helps us achieve a better work life balance and fit the physical store open hours around our lifestyles. We have amazing support in our community, which we are very thankful for."
Rebecca shared her thoughts on setting up business in the Hauraki District. "Just take the jump! It is a lot of blood sweat and tears, but we have found it just so rewarding!" Spending the working week in Waihi, she actually lives in rural Paeroa. "It's just a lovely balance for our family being in the middle of some amazing opportunities. We just absolutely love it!"
Check out the girls online store at www.thesustainablepantry.co.nz or pop in store with your reusable cup and say hi!
