Sorry! We DO NOT sell Chickens or eggs. The only 'Chook' who runs around the coop is our manager Graeme Fowler who might be worth selling depending on if he's behaving or not!
haha (sorry Chookie!).
WE DO however have the greatest range of clothing and accessories, all at affordable prices and exceptional quality!
Stockists for : Charlo, Ketz-ke, Leo+Be, Over the Ditch, Seduce, Zafina, Fate&Becker, Billabong, Element, RVCA, Quiksilver, Roxy, Oneil, Berlin Clothing, All About Eve Clothing, Silent Theory, Home-Lee, The Others, Eve Girl, RipCurl, Kustom. And many more!
They definitely don't sell chickens, or eggs for that matter!
But Graeme (Chook) and Donna Fowler have been dressing Hauraki locals from their Waihi fashion store for an incredible 47 years. Happy Birthday The Chook House (Fowlers Surf n Fashion) team!
First opening on the 5th November 1973, the store sure has changed in the years since. There has been a relocation, several store makeovers and constant evolution of stock ranges and suppliers - including the introduction of womens' clothing in the early 1990's.
As Chook says, "Not every year will be a good year, but stick with it, and don't ever be scared of change". Donna agrees, attributing a good deal of their success to their willingness to keep diversifying and maintaining positive customer relationships.
Introducing their online store was a worthwhile investment combined with strong social media campaigns and has increased their reach to a new nationwide customer base. Locals still get first pickings though with some lines available exclusively in-store, so it's first in best dressed! "Waihi is a great little town, we appreciate the years of support and hope for many more - thanks!" says Chook.
Online store only next day courier

Drawn to Hauraki to be closer to her mum who relocated to Paeroa approximately 8 years ago, the talented Eclectic Studio owner/ creator Rebecca, is enjoying a small town life in Paeroa. As mum of three, she was eager to escape the bustle of the city and the central location of Hauraki was very appealing. With a beautiful backyard which includes the historic Karangahake Gorge and the idyllic Coromandel Peninsula, it was an easy decision to relocate the family almost 12 months ago.
Eclectic studio was established four years ago as an Auckland based business which focused on interior spaces and design elements - specialising in restoration and revamps of heirloom style furniture, further complemented by a select range of gorgeous houseplants, floristry and kokedama.
Finding her premises in Paeroa was an exciting step, which has been welcomed by the locals. "Neighbouring businesses have been especially supportive and welcoming. It really caught me by surprise and it's made such a difference. Creating window displays and floral arrangements for them has been an honor."
Rebecca's favourite thing about being self employed is being able to do more of what she loves everyday. "I work longer hours for sure, but I think that when you love what you do, it doesn't seem so much like hard work. The past year has taught us all some valuable lessons, whether it is to slow down, follow dreams or to try new things."
With mothers day on the horizon, Rebecca is busily creating bespoke bouquets and gift hampers, something she is passionate about. "I really care about my customers and love to go out of my way to support life's milestones and flowers are a lovely way to let someone know that you are thinking of them. I get joy from passing on those messages and from being part of these moments."
Eclectic Studio also provide a custom interior design consultation, which brings confidence to your home decor decisions. She is partial to the old world charm of restored furniture which can create a bold statement in a modern home, but also loves to explore and appreciate a variety of style choices.
Due to rise in popularity of furniture restoration and painting, Rebecca now offers classes where you can learn skills and gain confidence with chalk paint. While painting at the workshop isn't practical (due to furniture size), she demonstrates correct product uses and techniques with opportunity for q & a and product samples to take home. Also included is additional support and advice during your at home restoration project.
Make your own kokedama night classes are also a fun way to fill a dreary winter evening. Gather some girlfriends, byo wine and enjoy an evening of nibbles and conversation while creating a kokedama to keep for yourself!
Follow along on Facebook at Eclectic Studio for updates on workshops and new stock arrivals, or you can sign up for updates on workshops. Better yet, make mum’s day and pop in store to say hi and find some gifts that mum is sure to love!

Paeroa Cinema still Iconic 93 years On.
Built in 1927 by Paeroa man Mr Percy Jennings, the art deco styled Aurora Theatre building still stands proud in the middle of Paeroa's main street. Now classified as Category B Heritage Status, the building has stood the test of time, and impressively the decorative features including the terrazzo sunburst entrance - the Aurora - are still substantially intact.
Mr Percy Jennings was an Electrical Engineer who was rumoured to have potentially made his own projectors for use in the cinema. Although little is known about him, Percy was clearly a clever and community focused man, and was also responsible for the construction of multiple other prominent buildings, including the Paeroa RSA building.
The name "Aurora Theatre" is believed to be a reference to the impressive lighting system, built into the perimeter of the auditorium ceiling and stage, somewhat state of the art for it's time, the lighting moved through a series of colour changes prior to all performances. Spread across two levels, the facility offered seating for as many as 600 patrons.
Following a somewhat bitter commercial rivalry with the Kerridge Group (who opened a competing cinema on Wharf St), in 1938 the Aurora Theatre was leased to Kerridge Odeon and the building was renamed 'The Regent Theatre'.
As widescreen technology developed in the 1950s, renovations were required to accommodate the new 32ft screen. The removal of the four large decorative columns which had framed the stage was necessary - sadly much of the visual appeal of the auditorium was then lost.
As television became more accessible in the 1970s, patronage at the theatre declined steadily and as opportunity came to renew the lease in 1980, the Kerridge Group declined, and the building was left vacant.
Today the building oozes more character than ever before. Now home to an eclectic variety of local artisans as well as antique, vintage and retro stores, it is sure to impress even the most avid retro collectors. AA Antiques, Junk and Disorderly occupy downstairs stores while aptly named 'Upstairs Downstairs' fills the upper level. The building has been repurposed, but in a way that is a fitting tribute of the bygone era.
Split into separate rooms, Upstairs Downstairs is a colourful collective of carefully curated retro clothing, shoes and decor, locally made treasures, handmade clothing and jewellery.
Lease owner Deborah Leonard has fond memories of attending the theatre as a patron "just a few years ago" and vividly recalls her last movie there - watching Born Free with friends.

A boutique clothing, lifestyle, homewares and gift store offering an eclectic and unique collection of products for everyone.
Lilian Vivian - owner of Willow gifts and lifestyle boutique
- sure knows how to rise to a challenge! Within the first six months of opening her boutique store she had both an extended streetscape project and a level 4 lock-down to contend with.
Staying positive isn't easy in tough times but Lily is feeling optimistic as the reputation of her beautifully curated collections grows. "I'm still getting known. It's too difficult to predict what will happen or to base decisions on the year that has been - it wasn't a normal year. But I do know that I survived it so it can only get better!"
A good deal of her clients now travel from the wider Hauraki District as well as slightly further afield - particularly from the Bay of Plenty and Auckland regions - just one of many advantages to being located on a state highway in the middle of everywhere. She would still love to meet more locals and has now introduced a loyalty scheme as a way of thanking customers for their support, so take the time to pop in and check out the range!
With an extensive background in retail, Lily made the move up from Christchurch after daughter Brianna found a prime retail spot up for lease in Ngatea. And it was worth it as vision turned reality when Willow opened on Labour Weekend 2019.
A unique and eclectic collection of 'a little something for everyone', Lily sources NZ made where possible and likes to focus on quality brands and natural fibres and textures across her impeccably presented range of clothing, giftware and home decor accessories. Some of her items are locally made including leather bags and native wooden boards. Noticing a lack of childrens' clothing in the wider area, she has made sure to include a good range of clothes, toys and accessories for the littlies.
Eager to keep it local where there is support to do so, she values an in-store experience over online shopping at chain stores and loves the inspiration that can be gained by the contrast of textures and colours, as well as the opportunity to experience the personal service that you can only get in a physical store - "By buying more consciously and making the decision to look local first, you are supporting more diversity in our community".
Reflecting on the lifestyle change that the last 18 months have brought, she wouldn't change much. "I love the closeness of everything and the ease of getting around, it's a big playground we have here. Coromandel, Auckland and Tauranga all on our doorstep. Why wouldn't you want to live here!?"

Ebony Hessey has a clear passion for fashion. Opening her first clothing store Glengyle Knitwear back in 1988, she currently has four stores trading as Ebony Boutique, with two Hauraki based locations.
Ebony Boutique has been a destination clothing store for Hauraki Plains ladies for over a decade. The newer Paeroa branch wasn't always part of the plan, but more a clever diversification to combat hurdles. Conveniently close to the Ngatea store, with encouragement from Hauraki District Council, a vacancy on Paeroa's main street caught Ebony’s eye as a solution to staying operational while a streetscape project was being completed.
An easy trip for their existing regular customers, the new store has been well received. Staff now travel between both the stores and as store assistant Dianne says "We really enjoy the relationships we get to build with our regular customers, and it's always lovely to meet the new faces too. People who are on holiday who stop for an ice cream and a leg stretch, will often pop in too."
